Honda To Launch Four Electric Two-wheelers Globally By 2024

  • The lineup has four consumer-targeted two-wheelers comprising two scooters and two motorcycles.
  • All two-wheelers will follow the norms stated in the Swappable Battery Consortium that Honda signed earlier this year with KTM, Piaggio and Yamaha.
  • Since India is a huge scooter market for Honda, we could see its electric scooters here.

Not long ago, Honda had joined hands with KTM, Piaggio (that includes all of its brands like Vespa and Aprilia), and Yamaha to form a Swappable Battery Consortium. These batteries would be used in their future light electric vehicles like mopeds, motorcycles, and tricycles (more deets here). Following this, Honda has now announced that it plans to launch as many as four electric two-wheelers by 2024, all abiding to the consortium’s norms.

According to the Japanese giant, the four two-wheelers would include three new bikes in the sub-50cc and sub-125cc equivalent classes, plus a motorcycle in its ‘FUN’ category, probably referring to a more performance-oriented bike. That said, the silhouettes in Honda’s presentation suggest that the four offerings could actually be two scooters, one commuter bike, and a more powerful offering.

This doesn’t really come as a surprise, though, since we’ve seen Honda patent many EVs in the past. To jog your memory, Honda has been working on a CB125R-based electric bike, and even an electric Grom.

But what about the high performance model? Well, Honda has a performance and tuning division, called Mugen, that also makes high-performance electric bikes, which are raced in the famous Isle Of Man TT. So the brand should have plenty in its arsenal to build a potent EV. Since all the aforementioned two-wheelers will feature standard swappable batteries, expect them to have a decent range.

Along with this, Honda’s also stated that the brand intends to end motorcycle fatalities (or at least decrease it by a chunk) on its products by 2050. We think this could be a hint at Honda’s upcoming radar-guided cruise control, that will debut in the GoldWing and the Africa Twin.
